Tonight after church my daughter and I were talking about our thoughts and words again. This has been an ongoing subject in my home for over a month now. I told her about the verse in the Bible that says to set your mind on Godly things and you will become more Godly. She asked how could she do that. Around her neck was a pair of headphones attached to a mp3 player that she just received for her birthday, I asked her what she was listening to. She said Kryptonite. And then began to explain to me what the song was about. She told me she didn't think it was a bad song. I asked her if it was a christian song. She said no. I said does it mention God. She said no. I then explained to her how many youth her age identify with music alot and how if she was to change that one simple thing, to listen to christian songs, then that would help her to think on God and the things of God.
The verse below is the one I mentioned to her.
Please notice the context:
Colossians 3:1-5
1IF THEN ( a requirement must be met) you have been raised with Christ [to a new life, thus sharing His resurrection from the dead],aim at and seek ( a command, something you must purposely do) the [rich, eternal treasures] that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
2And set your minds and keep them set ( a command, something you must purposely do) on what is above (the higher things), not on the things that are on the earth.
3For [as far as this world is concerned] you have died, and your [new, real] life is hidden with Christ in God. (a Biblical truth)
4When Christ, Who is our life, appears, then you also will appear with Him in [the splendor of His] glory. ( a promise from God)
5So kill ( a command, something you must purposely do) (deaden, [a]deprive of power) the evil desire lurking in your members [those animal impulses and all that is earthly in you that is employed in sin]: sexual vice, impurity, sensual appetites, unholy desires, and all greed and covetousness, for that is idolatry (the deifying of self and other created things instead of God).
God tells us the requirements we must meet and how to meet them, God then gives us the commands or rules of engagement and the Biblical truths explaining why. Then He gives us His promise for obeying. Isn't that too sweet?
Ephesians 4:22-24
22Strip yourselves of your former nature ( a command, something you must purposely do) [put off and discard your old unrenewed self] which characterized your previous manner of life and becomes corrupt through lusts and desires that spring from delusion;
23And be constantly renewed in the spirit of your mind ( a command, something you must purposely do) [having a fresh mental and spiritual attitude],
24And put on the new nature ( a command, something you must purposely do) (the regenerate self) created in God's image, [Godlike] in true righteousness and holiness.
This is how we are to renew our minds
2 Corinthians 10:4-5
3For though we walk (live) in the flesh, we are not carrying on our warfare according to the flesh and using mere human weapons.
4For the weapons of our warfare are not physical [weapons of flesh and blood], but they are mighty before God for the overthrow and destruction of strongholds,
5[Inasmuch as we] refute arguments and theories and reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God; and we lead every thought and purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One)
Remember Ephesians 6:13-18 we are to put on the armor of God before we go into the world, before we do anything, as soon as we wake up and have to function. Everyday we have to strive on purpose to renew our minds by the Holy Spirit through the Bible, prayer, church and circumstances so that God can reveal Himself, His purposes, and His ways to us. Set your mind and keep it set. Make up your mind right now and then do it.
